BGP Routing & Network Services

Autonomous
System Number

Take full control of your internet routing with your own Autonomous System Number (ASN). Whether you're building a multi-homed network, announcing your own IP space, or establishing robust BGP infrastructure, StormCloud provides the expertise and offshore-friendly environment to make it happen — with flexible KYC options and full privacy.

What Is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a unique identifier assigned to a network or group of networks under a common routing policy, as administered by a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) such as RIPE, ARIN, or APNIC.

With your own ASN, you can announce your own IP prefixes to the internet via BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), enabling multi-homing across multiple upstream providers, greater redundancy, and full control over how traffic enters and exits your network.

ASNs are essential for ISPs, large enterprises, hosting providers, CDN operators, and anyone who requires independent routing control, PI (Provider Independent) address space, or multi-homed connectivity.

Two Types

2-byte (16-bit) and 4-byte (32-bit) ASNs are available. Most new allocations are 32-bit.

BGP Sessions

An ASN enables eBGP (External BGP) sessions with upstream peers, transit providers, and IXPs.

PI Space

Combine your ASN with Provider Independent (PI) IPv4/IPv6 addresses for full portability.

Global Routing

Announce prefixes to the global routing table, making your network reachable from anywhere on the internet.

Offshore ASN Services

Your network infrastructure deserves the same privacy and resilience as your servers. We operate from offshore jurisdictions so your BGP announcements and IP space remain protected.

Offshore Jurisdiction

Our network infrastructure is anchored in offshore-friendly jurisdictions that respect data sovereignty. Foreign government takedown requests and overzealous regulatory actions do not automatically affect your routing.

Resilient BGP Routing

Our BGP sessions are maintained across redundant upstream providers. DDoS attacks, upstream provider pressure, and network disruptions are mitigated automatically, keeping your prefix visible to the global routing table.

No KYC · Crypto Payments

We accept Bitcoin, Litecoin, Tron, and 20+ other cryptocurrencies. No identity verification required. Your personal information is never collected beyond what is strictly necessary to deliver the service.

Privacy-First WHOIS

We advise on the most privacy-preserving registration paths available for your jurisdiction. WHOIS privacy options and nominee registration can be arranged to minimise your public exposure in RIR databases.

Who Needs an ASN?

ASNs are used across a wide range of industries and network architectures.

Internet Service Providers

ISPs require an ASN to participate in the global routing table, establish peering agreements, and provide internet transit to their customers.

Hosting & Cloud Providers

Data centres and hosting providers use ASNs to announce their IP space independently of upstream carriers, ensuring maximum flexibility.

Large Enterprises

Multi-site enterprises use ASNs to maintain consistent IP addressing across locations, implement multi-homing for redundancy, and reduce dependency on a single ISP.

Content Delivery Networks

CDNs announce anycast prefixes from a single ASN across multiple PoPs worldwide, routing users to the nearest edge node automatically.

VPN & Privacy Services

Privacy-focused services use ASNs and PI space to maintain full control over their IP reputation and routing, independent of any hosting provider.

Research & Academic Networks

Universities and research institutions require ASNs for inter-institutional peering, participation in academic Internet exchanges, and R&D networking projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ASN to announce my own IP space?

Yes. To announce IP prefixes over BGP to the internet, you need an ASN. Without one, you cannot establish eBGP sessions with transit providers or peers.

How long does ASN registration take?

Registration timelines vary by RIR. RIPE typically processes applications within 3–4 business days. ARIN and APNIC may take slightly longer. We handle the documentation to minimise delays.

Can I get a 2-byte ASN instead of a 4-byte ASN?

2-byte ASNs (1–65535) are largely depleted. New allocations are almost exclusively 4-byte (32-bit) ASNs. Both are equally valid for all BGP use cases in modern networks.

Is KYC required for ASN registration?

Standard RIPE ASN registration requires identity verification (KYC). However, we also offer specialized No-KYC ASN solutions for clients who require maximum privacy — our team can advise you on the best path for your specific needs.

Can StormCloud provide BGP transit alongside the ASN?

Yes. Our BGP Session Setup package includes upstream transit so you can start announcing your prefixes immediately after registration.
